2011 Season
Falcons Fall in Quarterfinals The Torrey Pines Falcons faced the number 2 seed Scripps Ranch Falcons in a CIF Quarterfinal rematch of last years CIF Final game. Unlike many of their previous efforts this season, Torrey came out strong at the start of the game. TP was fired up, connecting passes, taking shots on goal, dominating the first five minutes with the ball in the Scripps end. Following that start, the ball was back and forth with several attacks on both ends. The half ended with the score tied 0-0. Scripps had an abundance of short corners which TP was able to hold off. On one corner, SR managed to find the back of the cage. TP had a few more opportunities and there was another series of short corners by SR. A high ball was sent in, and on an assist from the refs it was ruled a goal. Torrey was unable to capitalize on any opportunities and the game ended 2-0. It was a valiant effort to end the season, but unfortunately, the score didn’t reflect the effort. (by Munchie) (photos) The
Torrey Pines Lady Falcons finished the season with 15 victories, 10 defeats (2
of them in strokes) and 1 tie. They finished Palomar League at 6-4. They
outscored their opponents 52 to 29. The goalie and defense generated 9 shutouts.
Overall, it was a season with tremendous growth, great heart and effort;
something of which to be very proud. The first round of CIF playoffs found the #7 seed Torrey Pines at home facing the #10 seed Otay Ranch. These two teams met previously in pool play of the Serra Tournament with TP winning 1-0 on a lumpy grass field. Rain was forecast for most of the day, but game time arrived under clear skies. It wouldn’t be right if TP got off to a fast start, so they didn’t. There were many chances, but the Falcons were unable to capitalize, the closest shot came when the ball bounced off the post. Finally, Hannie scored from the top of the circle off a short corner and the half ended 1-0. The Falcons came out much stronger in the second half and neither our defense nor Erica was tested. As Torrey continued to dominate possession and create opportunities, Shaina collected the ball in the circle and pushed it near post past the Otay goalie for the second goal of the game. The skies had yet to open up, but the goals for Torrey kept raining down as Argerey scored by redirecting a ball Hannie sent in on a corner. TP continued to connect their passes, initiated by strong 16 yard hits out of the defensive end. On one assault, Arg found the ball in the circle and slapped it past the keeper into the back of the goal and the game concluded with a 4-0 victory over Otay. This solid effort in the first round sets up a quarterfinal matchup with Scripps Ranch on Tuesday. (by Munchie) (photos) Falcons Whip Wolverines The final league game began with honoring the Westview Seniors and ended with Torrey walking away with the victory. Late in the first half, after another sluggish start, several Falcons got a touch on the ball in the circle and Alie tipped it in for the goal. After a questionable call went in our favor, Kristen beat the goalie to score on a stroke. Westview then got a series of short corners against us and finally scored on a ball that ricocheted into the back of the net. Torrey regained the momentum at the end of the first half with a ball Hannie sent in off her reverse to Clare who tipped it in for the score, ending the first half 3-1. TP continued to pressure WV in the second half and another goal came when Chandler took a ball near the stroke mark and sent it in. On a TP corner, Jennie tipped the ball into the goal to expand the lead. Clare then found the far post for her second goal of the game. The defense had a strong game and was happy to have Kiersten back with her newly repaired chin. The match ended 6-1 but the margin could have been much greater, as one of Chandler’s shots hit the post and a goal by Kristen was called back. (by Munchie) (photos) Torrey Trumps Titans Game time Friday brought hard driving rain and cold temperatures as Deeg paced the Poway sideline under her floral umbrella while the subs and walking wounded huddled thankfully under an enormous umbrella provided by Riley’s mom. The field was soggy, the players soggier. Action in the first half was back and forth, less about stick skills and more about determination. Both teams had opportunities and close calls with saves by Erica to keep the Falcons in the game. Chandler “Bullwinkle” Baldwin had a great run at the goal, flattening the goalie, who came away with the worst of it in spite of her full body padding and helmet. In the second half, Torrey made some adjustments, walling up on Poway’s 16 yard hits, preventing them from hitting long balls down the field. The defense suffered a blow when Kiersten took a hit to the chin, and had to leave as she required stitches. The game ended tied at 0-0, so on to another 7v7 overtime we went. But this match up was not going to end the way the RBV game ended. The Falcons, refusing to go to strokes, finished the game in the first couple minutes of overtime. A brilliant, split second coach’s decision to modify the normal short corner “G”, led to the ball going from Jennie to Hannie to Kristen, positioned at the top of the circle, who slammed the ball in for the win. This wasn’t the Falcons strongest performance, but they got the job done and came away with a much needed league victory. (by Munchie) (photos) Senior Night Heartbreak Senior night signaled the arrival of the high stick swinging, one hand dribbling, high skirt wearing, bean in the sock rubbing, mow you over like a freight train team known as RBV. The evening began with a ceremony honoring our seniors, Chandler, Hannie, Munchie, Erica and Rachel. Torrey started off strong, with Chandler scoring a determined goal after receiving a pass from Hannie near the stroke mark. Later in the first half RBV scored to tie the game and there were several more opportunities and short corners but we went into half time tied at 1-1. In the second half, a broken Torrey short corner led to an RBV breakaway but the threat was contained by Kiersten as she neutralized the advancing longhorn attack. Regulation ended with the game still deadlocked at 1-1. A ten minute 7v7 overtime ensued and TP dominated, showing our stick skills, controlling the ball in the RBV end and earning several short corners and just missing on several close shots. After OT ended still in a tie, we went into penalty strokes, evoking memories of last year’s CIF final game for some of these Falcons. The first round of strokes again found the teams tied, so on to sudden death strokes we went. In the stroke phase, Rachel and Munchie each made a successful stroke, while Kristen “Stone Face” Buchanan buried both of her strokes, but in the end TP was unable to match RBV and lost 2-1. In all, the Falcons played with a lot of passion and energy, connecting many passes and coming together as a team. This was a hard fought battle by Torrey and in the end we were lucky to emerge with all of our teeth intact and no one needing stitches. (by Munchie) USA! USA! USA! In case you’ve been wondering where Coach Shannon has been lately, the answer is Guadalajara, Mexico. Shannon has been with the National Team as they play in the Pan Am Games, hoping to earn a berth in the 2012 Olympics. On Friday, the finals pitted the #1 team in the world, Argentina, vs. the US with the winner earning an automatic entry into the Olympics. The US women pulled off a stunning upset, beating Argentina 4-2 with our own Shannon Taylor scoring one of the goals! Congratulations to Shannon and USA Field Hockey! USA! USA! USA! Mavericks fall to Falcons JV lost 2-0 Falcons Brand Broncos After a slow start, the Falcons sharpened their talons, firing multiple shots at the RB goalie and Argerey found the back of the goal to put Torrey ahead 1-0. The first half continued, an up and down battle, while Deeg paced the sideline growing older by the minute. Halftime offered a welcome respite for both teams, a time to ponder their mediocrity. The beginning of the second half saw a swing in momentum toward Torrey, with a more focused attack and an emphasis on connecting passes. The defense stepped up and silenced any offensive threats from RB. Good things come to those who wait, and following a series of shots and short corners, Julia blasted the ball into the far corner of the goal. TP continued to dominate possession, unleashing a sequence of passes starting in the defense, progressing through the midfield and ending with a tip off Alie's stick as the ball danced along the goal line, finally trickling in for a score. The short corners kept flowing, leading to more shots and second chances as the Falcons ran through their entire repertoire of plays. Finally, Hannie laid a ball in the circle off to Kristen, who pulled it to her reverse side as the sea of Broncos parted and she hit a beautiful shot past the goalie and several defenders. The game concluded a strong team effort and a solid league win leading up to the looming LCC matchup on Friday. (a Bettencourt effort) (photos) JV tied 0-0 (photos) Torrey Scores BIG vs Westview in 4-1 win The Falcons got back to their winning ways with a
dominating 4 to 1 league victory. Torrey was shorthanded with 4
players unavailable, but that did not seem to deter them from playing
extremely well. Alayna Tomlinson was the "new" goalkeeper (Erica
and Madison were away) and played very well for her first ever time in
goal. Alayna volunteered for this demanding position and made a
nice save in the first half of play and looked like a seasoned
vet. Torrey scored just 2 min into the game off a short
corner with a blast from Hannie. Not long after Jennie made a
really nice play to score again off another short corner and Torrey had
the early 2 goal lead. Westview managed a nice shot to beat
Alayna and the half ended 2 to 1 in favor of the Falcons. The
score did not fully indicate the dominance by the Falcons as the
ball seemed to be in the Westview end for most of the half.
Torrey also dominated with 13 corners in the first half to only 1 by
Westview. The second half was a total thrashing by the Falcons as
they scored 2 additional goals by Rachel and in her first action of the
season- a nice tip of a long Hannie shot by Shayna. It was great
to see our new player find the net in her first game with Torrey.
Westview barely passed midfield in the second half and did not have
another shot on goal. This was one of the most complete games we
have seen all season in all phases of play and a record 25
corners. Looks like the Falcons might be back on a roll at just
the right time to close the season and be prepared for the upcoming CIF
tournament. Great game and solid league victory by the Falcons. (Joe Cohen) (photos)
Torrey- 25 corners; 22 shots; 1 save
Falcons fall to Poway 1-0 This was another disappointing game
for the Falcons and mirrored the last few games with the play and
resulting close loss. The game was pretty evenly matched
throughout with the first half ending 0-0. Play was back and
forth with neither team mounting sustained pressure. The passing
was not crisp and the Torrey girls could not seem to get many good
shots on net. Poway was able to score midway through the second half
off of a scrum in front of the net. After 2 close in saves, Poway
was able to get the ball into the corner of the net. Our defense
was out of position and actually tried to do too much, which wound up
blocking Erica from making a full dive to get the shot that went
in. Thereafter, we tried to keep the ball in the Poway end and
wound up with several short corners, but were unable to tie the
game. Coach Deeg was clearly frustrated and hopefully the Falcons
can get back to their earlier season play to close out the regular
season strong. (Joe Cohen) (photos)
Torrey- 8 Corners; 4 shots; 11 saves
Poway- 8 corners; 12 shots; 1 save
Congratulations to our GoalKeeper -Erica Cohen who committed to UC Davis for next season
JV tied 0-0 (photos) Torrey falls to LCC in first meeting of the season 2-1
It did not seem to have the usual energy of
traditional matchups with LCC and our girls had a 2nd straight
sub par game. The only shot of the game that the Falcons could
muster, turned into their lone goal of the game. It came off of a
short corner with Kristen getting a pass from Hannie and hitting a
great shot past the LCC keeper. LCC answered with the tying goal when a
shot was tipped directly in front of Erica and went by her
pads. The 2nd LCC goal was a redirection tip that quickly changed
the ball from right side of cage to left and no chance for the save.
For the second straight game, the Falcons seemed to have someone
on them each time they touched the ball and could not get past the
pressure. When LCC got under pressure, they were able
to take long hits to clear the ball outside of their
zone. The Torrey girls tried to carry and pass the ball out with
very limited success. It was also clear that LCC was running harder
after balls and were playing with more intensity tonight. This
was another disappointing loss and hopefully the Falcons can gain their
energy back for an anticipated tough match next week against a strong
Poway team. (Joe Cohen) (photos) TP- 7 corners; 1 shot; 14 saves
This was not one of the Falcons best
efforts of the season and they went down to a 2 to 1 defeat. The
passing was not crisp and seemed like RBV beat the Falcons to most of
the loose balls. RBV put constant pressure on each of
our girls as we dribbled or attempted to pass. They used
their patented aggressive play and big hits to neutralize any Torrey
advances. RBV opened the scoring midway through the first half on
a hard shot off a rebound and was able to get the 2nd later in the half
when a ball bounced over the outstretched leg of Erica. RBV
controlled the action throughout and Torrey had a few decent chances
but could not convert. The 2nd half was when Torrey was able to show
some life as Chandler scored on a long shot to bring them within a
goal. RBV countered with a lot of pressure and at one point Erica
was on the ground for an endless time with the ball being kept close to
her pads as the RBV players continued to swipe at the ball.
Eventually Torrey was able to clear and kept it to the 1 goal. A
couple of chances near the end for Torrey but nothing clean and they
could not get any additional corners to try and get the equalizer. Had
it not been another outstanding effort by Erica with save after save,
this could have been much worse. A disappointing 2 to 1 loss to
RBV and one in which the girls knew they did not play their best
hockey. (Joe Cohen) (photos)
TP - 3 corners; 4 shots; 17 saves
Serra Tournament - Medal Round Quarterfinals vs. RBV Big 2 to 1 win over RBV to propel Falcons into semifinal game
On a cool early morning game, the Falcons came out flying and
scored a key goal midway through the 1st half. Chandler rifled a shot
into the corner of the cage to give TP a much needed lead in this hard
fought game. RBV has always been a very physical team and likes to take
big swings, which can cause injury. That was the case as they caused a
broken finger on our defensive team. The action was back and forth for most of the first
half, but the high flying Falcons were able to get the 2nd goal before
halftime as Jenny scored off of a short corner. Overall the first half
belonged to the Falcons who played very crisp and moved the ball
extremely well. The second half provided more pressure on the Falcons
defense as the aggressiveness of RBV started to pay dividends. Although
Torrey had a few nice chances, RBV had more scoring opportunities, They
finally broke through about 12 minutes in on a rebound which took a
crazy sideways bounce past Erica in goal. The Falcons were able to weather the storm and walk away with the
satisfying 2 to 1 victory. Next stop is the semifinals vs the
tournament's #1 seed Serra. (Joe Cohen) (photos)
RBV- 7 corners; 6 shots; 4 saves TP- 14 corners; 9 shots; 5 saves
Semifinal vs. Serra Disappointing 3 to 2 loss in gallant effort
In spite of 2 additional key
injuries to starters, the Falcons almost pulled the major upset.
The game started with back and forth action until Allie opened the
scoring off a nice shot into the corner of the cage for the early 1 to
0 lead. Jenny then provided some breathing room with a great shot
that beat the Serra goalkeeper for a 2 to 0 lead. As time was
running down in the half, Serra pulled their entire team up front on a
corner and scored with 10 seconds left on the clock. This goal
seemed to deflate the Falcons as they went into half time. The
2nd half was more tilted toward Serra, as the short manned Falcons
seemed to tire. Serra got the equalizer a few minutes into the
half and found the net again after a scrum in front of the net midway
through the 2nd half. The Falcons tried valiantly to mount a
comeback, but were not able to get the clean shots away to give them an
opportunity to score. The game ended with a tough loss but
everyone knew they played a great game and the team left everything out
on the field. Serra scored all three of their goals off of short
corners. (Joe Cohen) (photos)
Serra- 15 corners; 16 shots; 5 saves
TP- 9 corners; 6 shots; 12 saves
Consolation Game - Strokes vs. Scripps Ranch (1 to 0 Loss)
The coaches decided with the mounting
injuries to not risk any more and agreed to go directly to
strokes for the contest. Hannie had a great shot to give
Torrey their only Stroke and Erica saved the first Serra stroke.
After that, things went downhill for the Falcons and they were defeated
for 3rd place in the tournament. Not the results that Torrey had
hoped for but one of their better showings in recent years in this
tournament. The girls have a lot to be proud of and continue to
show great heart and desire. (Joe Cohen) (photos)
Congratulations to Hannie and Erica for making the All tournament team Erica was also named the most outstanding goalie of the Serra tournament
Falcons soar in big win over Broncos The 5 to 0 win was an offensive explosion for the
Torrey girls against an outmatched RB team. The Friday away game
proved to be no match as the Falcons scored early and often.
Rancho Bernardo could never get on track against the superior skills
and speed of Torrey Pines. Julia began the scoring off a nice
cross and then Allie scored a short time later after a number of shots
in front of the RB goal. And not to be outdone, Arch took a long
rebound and scored past the RB goalkeeper. The second half
domination continued with Allie scoring again on a hard shot in the
corner of the cage and the final goal was scored by Alayna off a scrum
in front of the RB cage. RB never mounted a serious scoring
threat as the Falcons controlled the midfield and the defense stepped
up as well.
Torrey- 8 Corners; 15 shots; 8 saves RB- 2 corners; 9 shots; 10 saves JV won 1-0. (photos) Winning streak continues for Falcons in victory over San Pasqual The Torrey Pines FH team now has a 7 game unbeaten
streak and continue to impress against top teams; the latest being the
1 to 0 victory against San Pasqual. On a cloudy and cool day, the
Falcons were able to continually stymie the San Pasqual attack and
escape with the hard fought victory. Torrey Pines was a bit
shorthanded as Madison and Megan were unable to play in
addition to Munchie. The game started with San Pasqual controlling the
action in the Torrey end, but the Falcons were able to change the
momentum about half way through the period and wound up with a
few good chances. The lone goal was scored by Julia on a
nice shot off a rebound after some sustained pressure, midway through
the first half. Another great opportunity came on a partial
breakaway, where the San Pasqual goalie came way out of the net.
Unfortunately we could not get a clean shot away and pushed the ball
directly into the pads of the opposing goalkeeper. The second
half provided San Pasqual with more quality chances and Erica was able
to make several really nice saves to preserve the victory. It is
nice to see that the Falcon women are finding ways to win, even on a
day where they did not have their best game. (Joe Cohen) (photos)
Torrey Pines- 4 corners; 7 shots; 11 saves

JV lost 0-2. (photos) Falcons keep on rolling with 1-0 victory over Vista Torrey handed Vista only their second defeat of the season in a strong
1 to 0 Falcon victory. The lone goal came at the very end of the first
half with :00 showing on the clock as the Falcons played out a stroke.
Hannie was able to push the ball past the Vista goalie off of a scrum
in front of the net after a flurry of shots. After all the pressure the
Falcons had in the half, this was a well deserved outcome. Also the
first goal of the season coming as time expired. The Falcons dominated play throughout the game and had a
total of 14 shots versus just 4 for Vista. This was expected to be a very
tough test for Torrey, as Vista came in with 7 wins against only 1
loss. This further shows how far the young Falcon team has come since
the loss to Fallbrook and resulted in a 6th straight game without a
loss (5 shutouts). It seemed like our girls were always a step quicker
to balls and were able to control the action from start to finish. Had
it not been for some fine goalkeeping from the Vista goalie, this could
have been a route. All in all, a very good passing game and tough
defense throughout. This should provide good momentum as the Falcons
head to play next week at San Pasqual- a perennial top San Diego team. (by Joe Cohen) (photos)
Torrey- 9 corners; 13 shots; 4 saves
Vista- 5 corners; 4 shots; 12 saves
Falcons continue to Soar The Torrey Girls played one of their most complete games of the season in the 3 to 0 win vs SDA. They had 20 shots and limited SDA to 4 while controlling most of the action in the SDA end of the field. Passes were crisp and on target, defense was smothering and the pressure was relentless. A complete victory in all phases of the game and it pushed the Falcons unbeaten streak to 5 games. It is clear that the girls are jelling and the improvement is remarkable. The 1st half ended 1 to 1 but could have been much greater if a few of the shots were higher after the SDA goalie who kept diving on the ground. Jennie made a really nice shot off a rebound to open the scoring midway in the first half off of a corner. SDA could only muster 1 shot of goal and the Falcons played their best half of the season. The 2nd half was much of the same but the scoring picked up as Claire poked a nice rebound shot past the SDA goalie after a semi break when Allie carried the ball down the sideline. Allie completed the scoring midway through the 2nd half after a scrum in front of the net. All in all, it was a great home win and keeps the momentum going into a tough home game VS Vista on Friday. (by Joe Cohen) (photos) Torrey- 20 shots; 14 corners; 4 saves
SDA- 4 shots; 1 corner; 20 saves
The JV Falcons had their hands full with the SDA Mustangs this week. Injury is plaguing the team with three starters on the bench which unfortunately means no substitutes for our field players. GK Grace Trupe had several good saves and Mimi Najmabadi scrambled to keep the ball out of the net and thwarted one of the Mustangs best chances to score. The 0-0 result does not show that, despite the exhaustion that set in by the end of the second half, we did control the ball much of the game in Mustang territory. (by Holly Coughlin) (photos) SERRA TOURNAMENT (Pool Play) 2 victories + 1 tie = Great Day for Torrey Game 1 vs. Otay
Torrey started strong and had the ball constantly
pushed into the OTAY end and dominated much of the play. Otay was
a physical bunch and had some skills, so not an easy 1st game. It
took the Falcons until midway through the 2nd half to break through
with a beautiful score by Kristen. It looked for the longest time
like the Torrey girls would not be able to put one past the goalkeeper,
even after many nice chances. The shots were just going off the
mark and barely missing the cage. Nice first win but good chances
lost to increase our goal differential that might be needed to advance
in the pool. (by Joe Cohen) (photos)
Torrey- 11 Corners; 11 shots; 5 saves
OTAY- 1 corner; 6 shots; 4 saves
Game 2 vs. RBV
This was the
game that pitted the top two teams in the bracket. RBV had beaten
Fallbrook earlier in the week and this was expected to be a very tough
game for the Torrey girls. RBV has always been a very physical team and
has the "one handed" midfielder who had given us trouble last year as
well. It turned out a scoreless tie and was a very even contest from
start to end. The Falcons had 2 great chances with beautiful passes
across the cage, but barely missed on both shots, even as our girls were
in great position on the far post to bang them home. RBV had several
tough scoring chances and made Erica work for the tie, with several
scrambling saves and second shot attempts. The game could have gone either way and showed how much our girls
have improved since the Fallbrook game. Crisp passes, tight D and very
physical play from the Falcons to match the RBV intensity and skill.
This was a great 0-0 tie and seemed to put us in great position to get
out of our pool to play the 2nd round in 2 weeks. (by Joe Cohen) (photos)
Torrey- 6 corners; 5 shots; 9 saves
RBV- 6 corners; 11 shots; 3 saves
Game 3 vs. Helix
This
was a lopsided contest from the start and Helix only crossed midfield 1
time throughout the contest. Torrey had a quick goal off a corner less
than 1 min in by Rachael with passes from Hannie and Kristen.
A few minutes later it was Jennie putting a shot in off a
scrum in front after a corner. Before the half was up, we had 2 more
scores by Hannie (from Kristen) and then Alayna. Halftime was Torrey 4
and Helix 0.
Second half was much of the same and the 2 goals were scored by Hannie (corner) and Alayna (long shot).
Our
girls completely dominated throughout and came away with a satisfying 6
to 0 victory to end a satisfying day at the tournament. (by Joe Cohen) (photos)
Torrey- 19 corners; 16 shots; 0 saves
Helix- 0 corners; 0 shots; 4 saves
Torrey SCORES big win vs. Mission Hills
Just what the doctor ordered - A big scoring output of 5 Goals to get the Torrey girls confidence back. The
Falcons dominated from the start and had play in the Mission Hills end
of the field for the majority of the first half. Chandler passed to
Julia for a quick score just 1:20 seconds into the contest and it looked
like a route in the making. Mission Hills had other ideas and was able
to mount a sustained attack that produced a score off a 2nd chance to
even the score before half time. The Torrey Girls came out strong in the 2nd half and
gained 2 quick corners, 1 of which produced a score on a nice pass from
Hannie to Argerey for the goal.
From there, the entire action was in the Mission Hills
end. Madison stopped a pass near the edge of the circle and fired
it past the Mission Hills goalie in the corner of the net for the 3rd
goal of the day. The final 2 goals were scored by Alayna- one
from a nice pass fed from Argerey and the 2nd on a rebound off a scrum.
Overall it was a very satisfying 5 to 1 victory and showed that
the Falcon girls are improving their passing and scoring
abilities. The pressure was relentless and made it a pretty easy
night for Erica in goal. (by Joe Cohen) (photos)

JV won 1-0 (photos) Falcons Outplayed by Warriors in Loss Falcons Varsity were outplayed for most of the game
by Fallbrook and were defeated 4 to 0. The Torrey offense
could not get any quality chances on goal and much of the action was in
the Torrey end. Fallbrook made many crisp passes and
were aggressive throughout in putting constant pressure on the Torrey
defense and goalkeeper. Fallbrook, with a majority
of seniors, showed their experience and skills against the young
Torrey team. Two of the 3 first half goals were disputed and
the referees ruled in favor of the Warriors. One appeared to hit a foot
before being put in and the second was high past 2 Falcon
defenders. The other goal was on a rare penalty stroke.
Erica made a valiant try as she launched herself, and actually tipped
the perfect shot that went high in the corner of the net, hitting the
far post as it went in. (by Joe Cohen)

Fallbrook- 13 corners; 28 shots; 2 saves
The JV Falcons took the "W" out of the Fallbrook
"arriors" in Tuesday's match up. Although both play and
possession were fairly even throughout the game, our girls consistently
found the back of the goal and came away with a 4-2
victory. Madi Coughlin smacked one in from the edge of the circle
very early in the first half to get things going. Sandy Taylor kept the
pressure on by putting up a pair of goals and Alessandra Stewart
sealed the deal with a goal of her own. The Fallbrook girls had
multiple opportunities with numerous short corners, but GK Grace
Trupe and our strong defense, lead by Player of the Game, Jasmine Dill,
kept Fallbrook to just two goals. (by Holly Coughlin)
Next on the schedule is Mission Hills at TPHS on
Friday, September 23. Let's get those Grizzlies runnin' for the
hills! Go Falcons!
Serra JV Tournament The JV Falcons were all tied up at the JV Serra Tournament this past weekend coming away undefeated, but with four tied games. Our first game versus Mira Mesa ended in a 0-0 tie. Our girls played well and controlled the ball much of the game, but were not able to score. Next up for the Falcons was the much anticipated match up with LCC where both the teams and play were evenly matched. We came away with a 1-1 tie with Madi Coughlin knocking in a long shot from the left side during the first half. The final game in pool play was against UC and, although we controlled the ball for nearly the entire game, we once again came away with a 1-1 tie with Anita Kelleher sneaking one past the UC keeper in the first half. Our Falcons came in second in pool play and faced
Poway in the consolation game, coming away with another 0-0 tie. Overall
results for the tournament were: Scripps Ranch in first, Serra in
second, LCC in third and RBV in fourth place. Congratulations
to Madi Coughlin and Sandy Taylor who were named to the JV Serra All
Tournament Team. (by Holly
Coughlin) (photos)
In a rematch between the two CIF Div 1 Finalists from
last year Scripps emerged as the winner in a hard fought contest 2 to 0
at Torrey Pines. The TP girls came out a bit sluggish at the
start and Scripps was able to control the play for the initial 10 min
of the game. Our girls started playing a bit more aggressive and
getting the ball into the Scripps zone, but a nice ball played across
the goal found the net for a 1 to 0 deficit. Torrey had a few
chances later in the half but that remained the score at halftime.
The second half was fairly evenly played until Scripps found the
net again after an initial save, with a ball in the corner of the
cage. From there, the action was up and down the field and for
the last 8 minutes, Torrey had most of the pressure in the Scripps end
and had several good scoring chances, but were unable to convert.
Hannie Bettencourt and Chandler Baldwin had strong games for
Torrey and once again Erica Cohen had a bunch of big saves to keep
Torrey in the game. It was a great effort by the Torrey girls
against a much more experienced Scripps team and gives them confidence
going forward that they can play with any of the top teams in San
Diego. (by Joe Cohen) (photos)
Scripps 12 Corners; 19 shots; 6 Goalkeeper Saves
Torrey 12 Corners; 6 shots; 13 Goalkeeper Saves
There is an expression when one athlete is getting the
better of another athlete..."she is really eating her lunch".
Suffice to say, the Scripps Ranch Falcons "ate our lunch" to the tune
of 8-0 at the match up on Wednesday afternoon at TPHS. Scripps is
a strong and experienced team and the pace of play reflected
that. To our credit, our JV girls played hard the
entire game and never gave up, they were just bested on both ends of
the field. We had a few scoring opportunities in the latter half
of the game, but were unable to convert. The JV girls
should be very proud of their hustle and perseverance during a
tough game when it was clearly not going their way. Up next
for our fiesty girls is the JV Serra Tournament this Saturday,
September 17 at Serra High School where they will be facing Mira Mesa,
LCC, and UC in pool play. Pretty sure our girls will be
packing a big lunch. (by Holly

County Times - League by League OutlookTorrey Pines Varsity Girls win thrilling battle in strokes against CCA 2-1 The initial 15 minutes of the game was controlled
largely by
the Falcons who had much of the play in the CCA end of the field.
Midway through the half, the CCA Ravens started to even things out
and there was action up and down the field. With about 10 min
left in the half, CCA broke through with a very nice goal off a cross
through the cage that Erica Cohen made a valiant dive to cut off.
She tipped the ball but the momentum of the cross carried onto a CCA
players stick and she fired it in. The first half ended with CCA
leading 1 to 0. The 2nd half was a fairly even affair until
midway into the session, when Hannie Bettencourt made a great spin move
after receiving the pass on a short corner. A quick and accurate
shot found the cage for a 1-1 tie. Both teams had some scoring
chances and there were several great balls that Torrey sent to the cage
but just missed getting a tip, so they were disallowed. CCA had a
great opportunity to win the game very late in the session when there
was a scrum in front of the Torrey cage and Erica made one stop up high
and then dove to stop a rebound attempt. Regulation ended in a
1-1 tie. In the overtime 7v7 session, there was a fast pace
but no significant scoring chances for either side. Next up,
strokes to determine the game. Both goalies stopped the
first 3 strokes and on the 4th stroke, Kristen Buchanan
took a laser shot into the corner of the cage for the Torrey
lead. Erica stopped the final 2 CCA attempts and
the win went to Torrey Pines. Several notable efforts
in addition to the ones mentioned above, were Allie Zimmer, who had
another strong game, Julia Petrey-Juarez who also played extremely
well; some nice defensive play by our defenders, and special mention
for Rachel Rankin who toughed it out, to play in the 7v7 OT, after
getting hit with a hard shot directly in the mouth. Overall it
was a tight, fierce contest and a great initial win for Torrey. (by Joe Cohen) (photos)
Torrey had 6 corners; 3 shots and 11 saves
CCA had 2 corners, 6 shots and 1 save
The JV Falcons had a great showing last Friday in
their match with the CCA Ravens. Our girls came out strongly with
Madi Coughlin and Ali Stewart both putting up goals early in the first
half to put the Falcons up 2-0. Sandy Taylor, Chloe Fogg, Phoebe
Mason- Flook and Amira Dhanoa kept the ball in Raven territority much
of the game and player of the game, Mackenzie Pope, defended our end of
the field fiercely to keep the Ravens to just one goal. It was an
exciting win for the girls against our Del Mar Heights rivals. (by Holly Coughlin) (photos)Falcons
stopped at Serra
The
Torrey Pines Varsity Field
Hockey Falcons put up a valiant fight in 102 degree heat at Serra High
Schools
grass Field, but were defeated 2 to 0 on Tuesday. The score was 0
to 0 at
half time with much of the action in the Torrey side of the
Field.
Several of our girls had to come out due to heat exhaustion and the
limited
subs tried to keep the game in check. Serra
scored midway through the 2nd half on a tough shot that found the
corner of the
cage after a scrum in front of the Torrey goal. The
second score came late in the half off of a corner and
hard shot
after an initial save. The Torrey girls had an excellent scoring
chance
midway through the half but the bouncing shot was deflected wide
by the
Serra goalie. Especially noteworthy efforts were noted by Hannie
Bettencourt,
Chandler Baldwin and Alie Zimmer. Erica
Cohen had an outstanding game stopping 19 shots and making several very
difficult saves. As Coach Deeg said, "you just cannot stop all of
them" as she congratulated Erica on an outstanding effort.
In the end the parents wilted from the heat,
but our girls hung tough to the end. A hard fought contest
against a very
good Serra team that has 8 seniors and is a favorite again for the CIF
Championship. Final shots were 21 to 3 and
Corners were 11
to 6 in favor of Serra. (by Joe

If you were wondering if it is possible to play field hockey on the surface of the sun...just ask our field hockey teams and fans! It IS possible and we did it at Serra HS. For the second time in a week, our fiesty JV Falcons faced the strong Serra JV team and we took home a loss, 5-1. The Conquistadors and the heat appeared to be a bit too much for our girls who, despite a valiant effort, were down 5-0 at the half. Our tenacious girls took the field ready to play in the second half and fought hard until the end. They kept Serra scoreless in the second half, and finally put one in the Serra goal late in the second half. (by Holly Coughlin) (photos) Falcons Scrimmage Serra The Varsity girls lost to Serra, 3-1. (photos) The JV Falcons dropped their first scrimmage of the year to the Serra girls, 3-1. The first half of the game was tough on our girls and they were behind 3-0 at the half. The JV persevered and the defense, lead by GK Grace Trupe played a strong second half, keeping Serra scoreless. The Falcons controlled the ball much of second half and Alessandra Stewart tapped one past the Serra goalie off a free hit by Madi Coughlin. The girls are showing a lot of heart and are really coming together as a team. Go Falcons! What's a parent to do?" Simple, take a look at the US Field Hockey basic rules. It's a short read and, coupled with the links on the page will provide everything (and more than) you'll need to know and will answer all of the questions you may have about the game. One of the most confusing aspects of watching the game is deciphering the frequent referee whistles. Here is a link which describes referee signals ( or chart). Also, the wikipedia field hockey page provides a bit more concise synopsis of the game.We always need photos at the games and anything related to team activities that would be fun to share with everyone. Also, for the JV games we need reports of game scores or even a short write-up about the game (or whatever you're motivated to write).
