Armed & Dangerous
“Do I think we’re good? Yes. Do I think we can score? Yes. Do I have confidence that we can beat this team? Yes!” Varsity coach Kari Labeta repeated these words of encouragement frequently as the Girls Field Hockey team faced opponent after opponent. Each rival offered new challenges, and each victory brought pride to the players’ faces.

Several changes initiated the new season: a new Junior Varsity II team was added to accommodate the growing interest in hockey and each team received new uniforms to accompany new coaches. “The greatest difference was he team unity,” stated captain Kristy Winters. We got along so well that our field playing improved.” The highlight of the Varsity season was placing first in the Bonita Vista Tournament.

Junior Varsity’s climax was beating rival school La Costa Canyon. “It felt incredible to beat LCC,” boasted Cecelia Carlsson. “It was what we worked all season for.”

The entirely freshman-composed Junior Varsity II team surprised everyone with their stalwart determination and impressive victories. Because many schools did not have a Freshman or Junior Varsity II team, this young squad played teams and tournaments at higher levels.  At the conclusion of a successful season, only one question remained: can field hockey conquer the world? Yes!

The TPHS Field Hockey Archives were assembled in 2008 in an attempt to document the history of the Torrey Pines Field Hockey Program. Unfortunately we didn't have a team website prior to 2003 (with the exception of a student-created website of the 2000 season). The Archives were created by the efforts of Joe Yogerst, Kari DiGiulio, and Analia Carlson. Former players, parents of players and coaches: to please send us whatever information that might have from the past that could help us fill in the missing years!
