New Girls' Team Room Fund Raising
[message from Colleen Golden]
Hi all, Thank you
again for volunteering to help with the water sales at graduation.
We are also hosting an exciting opportunity to help raise the remaining
funds needed to complete this project. Last week, the liaisons for
soccer and lacrosse and I went to the TPHS Foundation Board meeting to
request approval for an additional fund raising project. The project consists
of creating a "donor wall" of personalized tiles to memorialize your daughter's
high school experience as a field hockey, soccer or lacrosse player (or
multiple sports). White 6x6 tiles will be painted with the names
of the girls or families and their sports. It will hopefully be a focal
point/piece of art that will be meaningful for the girls now and for years
to come. Each tile will cost $250.00 and all proceeds will be used to fund
the lockers and furnishings for our new team room. We hope to have it ready
by the beginning of school this fall. I hope you will consider buying a
tile for your daughter. Seniors and alumni, you are welcome to order
a tile also!
I hope you will consider
reserving a tile to help fund this project. You can pre-order a tile
by making a check to:
TPHS Foundation $250.00
Memo: Girl's Team Room (FH/LAX or both)
You can mail the check to me: Colleen
Golden
Click
here to see a rough draft of the plans for the room. An order
form for the tile specifics will be forthcoming.

2007 Season in Review: Falcons
Win Palomar League
After losing a long-time head coach
and ten seniors to graduation it was supposed to be a "rebuilding year"
for the Torrey Pines varsity field hockey team. But it turned out to be
quite the opposite for new coach Ana Carlsson and her young Falcons, who
unexpectedly captured the Palomar League field hockey championship and
beat archrival La Costa Canyon in the process.
Torrey Pines finished the 2007 season
ranked No. 5 in San Diego with an overall record of 16 wins and 8 losses.
Eleven of the Falcon wins came against ranked opponents including upsets
over favored LCC and Scripps Ranch. But that doesn't even begin to explain
how well the team played over the last six weeks of the season, blazing
through the county's toughest league with seven wins and only one defeat,
and all the way to the CIF semifinals.
"I had faith in the girls from the
very beginning from coaching more than half of them last year [on the JV
team]," says Carlsson. "Even though we started off rough, they just needed
confidence that they were good enough to beat anyone. It finally hit them
at the Serra Tournament, when they were able to relax and come together
as a team."

Falcons Clinch Palomar League
Title
[November 7] Torrey Pines beat Poway 2-0 on Wednesday
night at mist-shrouded Titan Stadium to clinch the 2008 Palomar League
championship, a title they will share with LCC after both teams finished
7-1 in league play. Shelby Brown scoring the Falcons' first goal on an
assist from Sheridan Edwards with about five minutes remaining in the first
half. Torrey dominated play after intermission, racking up one short corner
after another, but didn't score again until Chelsea Yogerst blasted a pass
from Stephanie Cowles into the cage with less than three minutes to play.
For the Falcon defense, it was their seventh shutout in eight league games
and their 14th overall on the season. Torrey Pines finished the regular
season with 15 wins and 7 losses, ranked No. 5 overall in the county. The
Falcons now await word on CIF seedings with the first playoff game possibly
as early as Saturday.
Over on the JV side, the Falcons topped the Titans
3-0. Julia Colley scored what turned out to be the winning goal early in
the first half off an assist from Annelysse Eggold. Torrey added to the
lead a few minutes later when Dana Manheim scored off another Annelysse
assist. Alex Morino scored off a pass from Julia early in the second half.
The JV Falcons went undefeated in Palomar League play (7-0) and won the
league title by two full games over LCC. Their overall record was 16 wins,
3 losses and 1 tie. Fifteen of those games were shutouts.

Falcons Turn on the Offense
at RB
[November 2] Torrey Pines equaled its large scoring total
of the season on Friday afternoon, a 6-0 road win over Rancho Bernardo.
The Falcons got on the board about ten minutes into the game when Chelsea
Yogerst knocked in a pass from Keely O'Brien. Sheridan Edwards scored the
next two goals, the first unassisted and the second on a pass from Tori
Cameron. Keely scored on an assist from Chelsea to make it 4-0. And then
Paige Simmons tallied her first goal since coming back from injury - a
beautiful backhand off a pass from Kendra Bills - to give the Falcons a
five-goal halftime lead. The only score of the second half came from Alexa
Golden on a pass from Linda Rassenti. The Broncos came close to scoring
on two breakaways, one shut down by Amanda Krieger and the other snuffed
out when Ashlee came off of the crease to make a sliding save.
The JV Falcons also found the back of the net with
no small frequency, especially sophomore forward Julia Colley who scored
four goals en route to a 5-0 Torrey win over Rancho Bernardo. Julia's first
half scores came off assists from Dana Manheim and Elisabeth Walton. Dana
also scored before intermission on a pass from Selin Esener. Julia scored
twice again in the second 30 minutes, the first on a pass from Elisabeth
and the second from Annelysse Eggold. After their games, the varsity and
JV Falcons presented the RB girls (their neighborhood ravaged by the big
fire last week) with a gift card and gift baskets, respectively.
Freshmen Blow Out Vaqueros
The Freshmen Falcons shut out El Capitan's JV 7-0. Torrey
dominated the game, playing most of it on the Vaqueros' half. The Falcons
had 7 offensive short corners. Mia Colbert led the team in scoring with
3 goals. Each of the following had 1 goal: Caitlin Mackey, Kimmie Sabraw,
Stephie Sabraw and Meghan O'Rourke, with assists coming from Caitlin, Emily
Slesinger, Zoey Zobell and Meghan. The Freshmen team and coaches thank
Lauren Humann for helping out in the goal. She is always so positive even
when she hardly touches the ball!!
LCC Sequel: Revenge of the
Mavs
[October 31] No. 1 ranked La Costa Canyon avenged
an earlier loss to Torrey Pines - their only defeat for the Mavericks in
their last 23 games - with a 2-1 victory at Falcon Stadium on Halloween
afternoon. Torrey took an early lead on a shot by Linda Rassenti (off a
short corner push from Stephanie Cowles and stop by Shannon Smoot) around
12 minutes into the first half. But LCC came storming back, tying the game
about ten minutes later on a breakaway by Mavs forward Tara Arolla that
ended with an incredible spin move that left her one-on-one against Falcon
keeper Ashlee Schlesier. Wake Forest-bound midfielder Lauren Greenwald
notched the winning goal around midway through the second half on a hard
shot from the top of the circle. The two teams are now tied at the top
of the Palomar League standings with identical 5-1 records. Depending on
the seedings, there is a good chance they could meet again in the upcoming
CIF playoffs.
The JV Falcons beat their LCC counterparts 1-0,
their third victory over the Mavs this season. Torrey dominated both halves
and had 12 short corners to La Costa Canyon's none. Sophomore forward Jessica
Brown scored the winning goal with about seven minutes to play in the second
half. Her shot deflected off an LCC defender's stick, looped over the keeper's
head and into the cage. With two games to play, the win assures the Falcons
at least a tie for the Palomar League JV crown.
Freshmen Shut Out LCC
[October 31] The Freshmen shut out LCC this afternoon
2-0. Unfortunately there wasn't a referee so the coaches took turns refereeing
the game. The Falcons' first goal was scored in the 3rd minute of the game
with a hard hit from Kimmie Sabraw with Amy Takahashi tipping it in. Torrey
scored again in the second half off a nice hit from Sophie Edelman and
Zoey Zobell tipped it in the goal. Everyone played a good game, and the
freshmen coaches and team thank Lauren Humann, the JV goalie, for helping
them out again!!
Torrey Tackles Tough Titans
[October 19] The Falcons varsity finished off the first
half of their Palomar League schedule with a hard-earned 1-0 win over Poway
on Friday at Falcon Stadium. The visiting Titans grabbed the early momentum
and controlled much of the action during the first 10 minutes, before Torrey
got its act together and turned the tide. The game was scoreless at the
half, but the Falcons attacked with renewed energy after intermission,
finally taking the lead with about 13 minutes left to play. The game's
only goal was a tap-in by sophomore forward Chelsea Yogerst out of a crowd
in front of the Poway cage. With momentum now firmly on their side, the
Falcons kept the Titans bottled up in their end as the minutes ticked down.
Another fine game for the Torrey defense and midfield, which barely let
the visitors past midfield during much of the second half.
JV won 1-0. The Falcons missed a penalty shot, and there
was no score at the half. TP controlled the ball most of the second
half but only scored once. The goal came off a really great assist
by Elisabeth Walton (it was a long, hard pass) that Jessica Brown tapped
in. Torrey had 12 short corners to Poway's 1.

Falcons Stampede Past Broncos
[October 17] Torrey Pines beat Rancho Bernardo
4-0 on Wednesday afternoon to maintain their slim lead over LCC at the
top of the Palomar League standings. The visiting Broncos managed to muster
only one good attack against the tough Torrey defense, as keeper Ashlee
Schlesier racked up her 11th shutout of the season. It was the Falcon offense
that put on the show this time with fast breaks, constant attacks and probably
their best passing of the season. Chelsea Yogerst slammed home what would
turn out to be the winning goal less than three minutes into the game,
on a great pass from Alexa Golden. Shannon Smoot made it 2-0 at halftime
on an unassisted goal that capped a brilliant solo run up the middle of
the RB defense. In the second half, Tori Cameron scored on a rocket from
the top of the circle (another Alexa assist) and Kendra Bills notched the
final Falcon goal on a pass from Linda Rassenti.
The Falcons junior varsity won 3-0 over Rancho
Bernardo, but with a little luck the goal difference could have been a
lot wider. Despite dominating the first 30 minutes, Torrey found themselves
locked in a 0-0 tie at the half. The Falcons missed a penalty stroke early
in the second half, but then found themselves with another just minutes
later, as Lucy Busby gave Torrey the lead. Lucy scored again (off an assist
from Elisabeth Walton) about midway through the half. Julia Colley rounded
off the Falcon scoring with just 41 seconds remaining in the game, off
an assist by Annelysse Eggold. Torrey notched 16 short corners versus none
for RB.
Falcons Fourth at Serra Tourney
[October 13] Torrey Pines wound up fourth at the 2007
Serra Invitational Field Hockey Tournament. Exhausted after their emotional
win over LCC the day before, the Falcons advanced to the semifinals via
a 1-0 win over Fallbrook on strokes in a game that ended scoreless
in regulation. Sheridan Edwards and Keely O'Brien tallied both strokes
for Torrey while keeper Ashlee Schlesier masterfully turned away all four
Warrior shots she faced. In the semis, Serra jumped out to an early
1-0 lead over the Falcons on a break up the middle only three minutes into
the game. Torrey dominated much of the rest of the game, but couldn't pull
even. Serra made it 2-0 with less than three minutes to play, before the
Falcons finally scored on a goal by Chelsea Yogerst (on a pass from Linda
Rassenti) in the final moments. In the consolation final vs Scripps
Ranch, the Falcons took an early lead on a goal by Chelsea (on another
great pass from Linda). But Scripps staged an impressive rally to win 3-1.
Later in the afternoon LCC clinched the championship with a 2-1 win over
Serra in overtime. Tori Cameron and Shannon Smoot were both named
to the all-tourney team.

Falcons Upset Top-Ranked Mavericks
[October 12] Torrey Pines pulled off the biggest upset
of the field hockey season on Friday afternoon, a 1-0 win over previously
undefeated and No. 1 ranked La Costa Canyon on the road in Carlsbad. Winners
of the last two CIF San Diego section championships, the Mavs were riding
a 16-game win streak stretching back to last season. Senior middy Stephanie
Gerretsen notched the game's only score with seven and a half minutes left
to play and the tough Torrey defense fought off a late Mavs rally to preserve
the win. The sequence that yielded the winning goal started on a Falcon
short corner that LCC cleared toward the sideline. Stephanie Cowles outraced
a Mav player for the ball, flicked it to Linda Rassenti, who then passed
to Gerretsen. Stephanie beat an LCC defender and fired off a shot from
about seven yards out. LCC keeper Molly Cassidy, shielded by Chelsea Yogerst
camped out in front of the cage, couldn't get a bead on Stephanie's blast
until it was too late. With Shannon Smoot, Shanthi Devasirvatham and Linda
rock solid in the middle, and Amanda Krieger and Sharon Wiley covering
the flanks, Torrey's defense had perhaps its best outing of the season
in shutting down the high-powered LCC offense. The Falcon midfield trio
of Sheridan Edwards, Kendra Bills and Alexa Golden also had an awesome
game. Last time that Torrey's varsity and JV both beat LCC on the same
day was Oct 14, 2004.
The JV Falcons gave Coach Ana
Carlsson a double win on the afternoon by besting LCC 2-1 after the varsity
game. Torrey dominated much of the game and had nine short corners to just
one for the Mavs. Elisabeth Walton put the Falcons into the lead about
midway through the first half, on a pass from Annelysse Eggold. LCC came
out smoking after halftime and quickly tied the score. But the Falcons
fought back, attacking again and again. Julia Colley finally put them ahead
to stay with less than four minutes to play, on a quick flick out of scrum
in front of the Maverick's cage. The junior varsity is now 2-0 against
their archrivals this season, having previously beat them in Serra Tournament
pool play.
Freshman Falcons Shut Out
Santana JV 5-0
[October 11th] TP Frosh had a great game against Santana
JV tonight and came away with a 5-0 win. The Falcons dominated the first
half and scored their first 4 goals by half time. In the second half the
Falcons swapped positions of many players so they wouldn't run up the score
and to let our defenders play forward. First half goals: 1. Stephie Sabraw
scored in the first 5 minutes of the game with an assist by Sophie Edelman,
2. Amy Takahashi scored an unassisted goal 10 minutes into the game. 3.
Kimmie Sabraw scored an unassisted goal in the last 10 minutes. 4. Zoey
Zobell scored in the last 5 minutes with an assist by Brittany Norfleet.
The second half was fairly uneventful, but everyone got to play a new position.
In the last minute of the game, Meghan O'Rourke scored off a short corner
with an assist from Carla Gonzalez. The frosh Falcon team wishes
to thank Lauren Humann, our JV goalie, for filling in as keeper for this
game.

Falcons Scorch Sun Devils
[October 9th] Torrey Pines dominated from start to finish
in a 6-0 victory over Mt Carmel, the team's fifth straight win and
biggest offensive display of the season. Chelsea Yogerst scored what turned
out to be the winning goal about five minutes into the first half, on a
nice pass from Linda Rassenti. Mt Carmel appeared to tie the score a few
minutes later, but the goal was disallowed because no attack players touched
the ball inside the circle. After that it was all Torrey, Julie Westover
scoring unassisted and then Sheridan Edwards on a rebound off the Sun Devil
keeper to make it 3-0 at the half. Chelsea scored twice after intermission
- both on passes from Tori Cameron - to notch the Falcon's first hat-trick
of the season. Alexa Golden rounded off the scoring on another assist from
Tori, her third of the game.
Freshmen Falcons lose to Serra
JV
[October 9th] It was a well fought fight but the Freshmen
Falcons lost 3-1 this afternoon to Serra's JV team. The Conquistadors first
scored on a penalty shot and then again right before halftime. Torrey went
down 3-0, but towards the end of the game Zoey Zobell scored a nice goal,
with the assist coming from Sophie Edelman. We want to thank both the JV
keepers: Lauren Humann and Heather Schlesier for playing in the goal for
us. They both did a great job!! Game
photos contributed by Elizabeth Reed.
Minor Schedule Change...
Ana made arrangements to swap the locations of the RB
games so that we can play on the turf when we play them at home (Thanks
Ana!). We now play RB at home on Oct 17, and play at RB on Nov 2,
both game times are 3:15pm for Varsity and JV plays afterward. The schedule
page and the printable schedule
now reflect these changes.

Torrey Fights Off Wolverines
[October 4th] In a match pitting two of the top seven
teams in the county, Torrey Pines
beat a determined Westview squad 1-0 on Thursday
night at Falcon Stadium.
Senior forward Tori Cameron scored the game's only goal
with about two
minutes left in the first half, on a short corner push
by Sheridan Edwards
and stop by Shannon Smoot. The Falcons dominated much
of the game, earning
15 short corners versus seven for the Wolverines. Westview
didn't really get
on track until the last five minutes, frantically trying
to tie the score
with repeated attacks into the Torrey end. After 14 games,
varsity has nine
wins, four losses and one tie.
The JV Falcons topped their Westview counterparts
2-0 on the baseball field.
Both goals came in the first half, the first by Elisabeth
Walton on a pass
from Julia Colley, and the second by Ellen Park off a
dish from Walton. JV
now has 11 wins, three losses and two ties.
Freshmen Falcons shut out
Helix JV
[October 4th] The Torrey Freshmen celebrated a 1-0 win
this evening tonight over the Helix JV team on their home turf. The
Falcons seemed to dominate the game, but it was a challenge to get the
ball in the cage. Amy Takahashi scored the Falcons' only goal in the last
5 minutes of the game, with the assist coming from Kaylee Mikuteit. Once
again, Lauren Humann, from the JV team, did an excellent job filling in
as the Torrey goal keeper. (The
game photos are here.)

Falcon Alums Continue to Excel
[October 3rd] Torrey Pines alums continue to shine at
the college level,
putting in several stellar performances last weekend and leading their
teams to rankings in the national Top 20. Katie
Griswold (2007) scored her third goal of the year for Indiana
in an overtime loss to No. 5 ranked Iowa.
Katie has started all ten games for the Hoosiers at forward. Heather
Wiley (2005) helped No. 6 Michigan
notch wins over Big Ten rivals Ohio
State and Penn
State. Megan
Psyllos (2007) got her first start of the year for California,
playing midfield in a 4-1 thumping of Stanford
- the Bears' 18th straight victory over their cross-bay rivals. Tami
Becker (2004) has appeared in all but one game for the 14th ranked
Boston
University Terriers, including a recent win overly highly ranked Virginia.
Missy
Briery (2004) has started six games for No. 17 Louisville,
racking up two goals and two assists along the way. Jessica
Reading (2005) has started all eleven games at midfield for the
Miami
of Ohio Red Hawks. Jessica and Heather battled
opposite each other when the Red Hawks traveled to Michigan last Saturday.
Torrey Hits No. 4 in Field
Hockey Rankings
Torrey Pines was ranked fourth in San Diego County in
the first coach's poll of varsity field hockey teams in San Diego County,
released last week by the North County Times newspaper. The rankings were
compiled before the Falcon games vs. San Pasqual and Serra, and the first
round of the Serra Tournament.

Falcons Shine at Serra Tourney
[September 29th] It was a day when the Falcon seniors
cranked up the leadership and the younger players came of age, as Torrey
Pines went undefeated and soared to the top of the leader board at the
annual Serra Tournament. In tying LCC for most points (21) in pool play,
the Falcons didn't allow a single goal and beat a team that many people
consider the best in the county this year. The 1-0 win over heavily favored
Scripps Ranch was sweet revenge for a three-goal loss at home just eight
days prior. Senior forward Tori Cameron scored the game's only goal about
five minutes into the first half, off a short, sharp pass from junior middy
Kendra Bills. Torrey kept the (other) Falcons at bay the rest of the game
with a solid back line, a midfield that wouldn't back down, and solo runs
by the forwards deep into Scripps territory. Scripps came into the came
riding an eight game win streak against San Diego competition during which
they were averaging 8.3 goals per game.
Torrey Tops El Cap and Otay
In other first round Serra Tournament games, Torrey topped
El Capitan 3-0 and Otay Ranch 5-0. Senior forward Julie Westover got the
Falcons on the scoreboard against El Cap about seven minutes into the second
half, off a blast from sophomore Chelsea Yogerst. Kendra notched the second
goal off a pass from Tori, and then Tori picked up the third on a dish
from Kendra. Julie scored twice against Otay, the first off a pass from
Stephanie Gerretsen and the second on a rebound off a Linda Rassenti rocket.
The other three scores came from senior captain Shannon Smoot on a penalty
corner, Kendra on an assist from Julie, and Chelsea on a nifty pass from
soph middy Stephanie Cowles.
Serra Tournament Pool Round
Standings:
1. LCC 21 points (won coin toss over TP for first)
2. Torrey Pines 21 points
3. Scripps Ranch 18 points
4. Serra 15 points
5. Westview 11 points
6. Poway 10 points
7. Fallbrook 8 points
8. SDA 5 points

Eagles Best Falcons in Double
Overtime Thriller
[September 27th] The latest version of Torrey Pines vs
San
Pasqual may have been low scoring, but it was one of those games that
drives home the point that field hockey can every bit as exciting (and
nail-biting) as sports where they run up the score. The Falcons came out
on the short end of a 2-1 score in a game that raged across regulation
and two overtimes. There was brilliant hockey on both sides, a battle that
raged up and down the Falcon Stadium turf for nearly two hours. Junior
middy Sheridan Edwards gave Torrey a lead over the favored Eagles (one
of the county's top three teams this year) about 20 minutes into the first
half when she scored off a short corner combo from stopper Chelsea Yogerst
and hitter Shannon Smoot. The Falcon defense was incredible after that,
especially senior Shanthi Devasirvatham and keeper Ashlee Schlesier, who
helped turn away numerous Eagle attacks into the Falcon circle. The visitors
finally drew even with less than two minutes to play, sending the game
into wild 7v7 overtime that featured dangerous fast breaks and defensive
heroics from both sides. The outcome was in doubt until the final moments
of double overtime when San Pasqual scored a "golden goal" off a three-on-one
break.
Over on the junior varsity side, San Pasqual scored
in the first few minutes and never looked back, racking up a 3-1 win over
the Falcons. Kaitlin Mohr scored Torrey's lone goal late in the game, on
what appeared to be an assist from Elisabeth Walton.
Frosh beat LCC
[September 26th] The freshmen team had an amazing game
against the LCC freshmen team on Wednesday, winning 2-1 on the turf.
The first goal was a hard shot by Brittany Norfleet on a short corner (set
by Kaylee Mikuteit) early in the game. LCC managed to sneak one in
during a crowded battle in front of the goal, but TP came back with a lot
of energy in the second half, with Sophie Edelman scoring off a great run
down the field. The defense had a good game as well, only allowing
one (maybe none?) short corners. All of the girls played extremely
well at every position and thanks to JV goalie Lauren Humann for playing
with us - she did an awesome job! We also have a
few game photos.

Serra Shoots Down Falcons
[September 25th]
The varsity Falcons suffered another tough loss on Tuesday, going down
2-0 to Serra on the road. The momentum swung back and forth in the
early going, with Torrey getting off several good shots (by Alexa Golden
and Chelsea Yogerst) that Serra's keeper somehow blocked. The Lady Qs drew
first blood when they intercepted a Torrey clearance right outside the
circle and slammed the ball into the goal off two quick passes. A few minutes
later, Ashlee Schlesier blocked her second penalty stroke in as many games.
The Falcons dominated the early part of the second half, earning four short
corners that produced great shots by Tori Cameron and Sharon Wiley -- once
again blocked by the Serra keeper. The Conquistadors iced the game with
about 10 minutes to play when one of their forwards pounced on a loose
ball in front of the Torrey goal and flipped it back-handed into the net.
The JV Falcons also came up short, losing 2-1 to
Serra in overtime in a game that saw almost as much action off the field
as on. The Lady Qs took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but couldn't hold the
momentum, as Torrey charged back in the second half and tied the game on
a shot by Ling Yeung. Serra racked up the only score in overtime to take
the win. But it wasn't pretty, especially on the sidelines, as a vocal
Serra parent was asked to leave the field and the Q's coach was slapped
with a yellow card.
Serra Tournament Information

Falcons Fall to Scripps Ranch
[September 19th] The Falcons youthful inexperience finally
caught up with them on Wednesday night, as they tangled with a senior-heavy
Scripps
Ranch team that some people consider the best in the county this year.
The visitors pulled off a well-deserved 4-1 victory, but the final score
doesn't reflect how close the game was for much of the time. Senior forward
Jackie Nguyen provided all the firepower the (other) Falcons needed, scoring
all four of the Scripps goals, the first about halfway through the first
half. Torrey keeper Ashlee Schlesier blocked a penalty stroke early in
the second half, but just moments later Nguyen popped in her second score
of the evening. The home team replied with a goal by Shelby Brown off a
long dish from the top of the circle, but their subsequent attacks were
thwarted by the stingy Scripps defense. Nguyen scored twice in the waning
moments to turn what had been a close game into a runaway.
The Torrey-Scripps JV game was a complete contrast
in style, with zero goals scored through regulation and overtime. The visitors
dominated the first half, Torrey the second half, but neither could score.
It came down to strokes, with Kaitlin Mohr and Elisabeth Walton converting
for Torrey versus just one for Scripps. Final score 2-1 in favor of Torrey
in one of the more exciting JV games of the year.
Falcons Rally Past Broncos
[September 18th]
In one of the most exciting games of the season, Torrey Pines pulled off
a major comeback in the second half to top a determined Rancho Buena
Vista team 2-1 at Falcon Stadium. With many of the players back from
a team that took the Falcons to strokes in the first round of last year's
CIF playoffs, the Broncos dominated much of the first half, finally scoring
on a long shot from the right side of the circle with about five minutes
to play until intermission. The second half was wild, both teams storming
up and down the field, and attacking repeatedly. Sharon Wiley tied the
game about 10 minutes into the half when she knocked in a rebound off a
short corner sequence. The Broncos came storming back, but couldn't score.
They hit the right post with one shot, missed a wide open net on another,
and were frustrated again when keeper Ashlee Schlesier came about 30 yards
out of the Torrey goal to snuff an RBV fast break. Ashlee's spectacular
sprawling save shifted momentum back to the Falcons, a series of attacks
that drew a penalty stroke with about five minutes to play. With penalty
specialist Paige Simmons on the sidelines with a knee injury, Shannon Smoot
was given the opportunity to decide the outcome of the came - a stroke
that sailed into the upper left-hand corner of the Bronco goal for the
win. RBV mounted a furious late rally, but the Falcons were able to run
out the clock on the back of a two long solo runs through the Bronco defense
by soph forward Chelsea Yogerst.
In a carbon copy of the varsity game, the JV Falcons
rallied past the Broncos for a 2-1 win. After a sluggish first half in
which they found themselves trailing by a goal, the Torrey girls picked
up the pace, tying the game on an unassisted goal by leading scorer Julia
Colley and then finally going ahead when Alex Morino found the back of
the cage off a pass from Annelysse Eggold.
JV Falcons are Finalists in
Serra Tournament
[September 15th] Torrey Pines JV had a full but fun day
today, playing through to the championship game of the 10th annual JV Serra
Tournament. The scores of the bracket games were as follows:
Game One – Torrey Pines 1, Hilltop 1, goal by
Dana Manheim on an assist by Annelysse Eggold.
Game Two – Torrey Pines 3, Mira Mesa 0, first
goal by Dana Manheim on an assist by Julia Colley, second goal by Alex
Morino on an assist by Ling Yeung, and the third goal by Julia Colley (unassisted).
Game Three – Torrey Pines 2, Fallbrook 0, first
goal by Kaitlin Mohr on an assist by Julia, and the second goal by Julia
(unassisted).
Torrey Pines shut out LCC 1-0 in the semifinal with a
goal by Julia on an assist by Annelysse.
The final game was scoreless at the end of the first
half, but Serra came out strong in the second half scoring two unanswered
goals, and ultimately won the championship title. Falcon keeper Heather
Schlesier had an impressive game with her numerous saves.
Four Torrey Pines players were chosen for the "All Tourament
Team": Elizabeth Walton, Heather Schleisier, Julia Colley and Annelysse
Eggold.
Here are
a few photos taken during the day.
Falcons Fly Past Panthers
[September 14th] Back on our stadium turf, Torrey Pines
Varsity shut out Vista 4-0 today. What started as an evenly matched game
changed almost midway through the first half when Alexa Golden put the
Falcons on the board in the tenth minute with an assist from Dorian with
a tip-in shot from the bottom corner. Two minutes later Stephanie Gerretsen
scored on a short corner with an assist from Paige Simmons. The Falcons
dominated the second half, with the Panther rarely moving the ball to their
goal. Shannon Smoot scored the third goal on another short corner assisted
by Stephanie Cowles. Minutes later the Panthers fouled in front of the
cage, which gave Paige the opportunity to fire in our final goal on a penalty
stroke that was untouched by the Panther goalee.
JV claimed their fifth consecutive shut-out with a 1-0
victory over the JV Panthers, although it was a competitive game, not an
easy win. The JV Falcon goal was by Dana Manheim in the second half.
Falcons Fall to Fallbrook
[September 12] Varsity suffered their first loss of the
season today to Fallbrook. The Falcons seemed to dominate in the first
half, which ended with no score. After the break the Eagles came out strong
and notched their only goal early in the second half. Torrey Pines
had a number of close shots but ultimately didn't convert them, leaving
the final score at 0-1.
JV Falcons continue their streak of shut out games with
a 4-0 victory over the Eagles. Early in the first half Julia Colley scored
unassisted to put the Falcons on the board. Subsequent goals were by Kaitlin
Mohr on an assist by Annelysee Eggold, Annelysee unassisted, and Lucy Busby
on an assist by Julia.
Freshmen Narrow Loss to San
Pasqual JV
[September 10] The Freshmen Falcons lost 0-1 to San
Pasqual's JV team. The freshmen were excited to have held the more
experienced JV squad to one goal after having only a week of official practices.
We wanted to thank the JV goalie, Heather Schlesier, for helping us out
today. She was amazing and had plenty of saves, including a penalty shot.
Heather and our defense were amazing!!! Click

Falcons Run Past Visiting
Mustangs
[September 6] Once again playing on the baseball field,
Torrey Pines earned its second straight win of a regular season, a 1-0
victory over perennial top ten power San Dieguito Academy. The Mustangs
were quick out of the gate and threatened to score on several ocassions
before momentum swung in the Falcon's favor. Several brilliant saves by
the SDA keeper lead to a scoreless first half. The Falcons resumed the
attack after intermission, finally grabbing the lead on a tap-in by soph
forward Shelby Brown off a sharp pass from Alexa Golden on the right side.
JV Falcons beat the 'Stangs 4-0. Freshman Dana Mannheim
scored her first goal in a Falcon uniform (off an assist from Julia Colley)
to give the Falcons the lead about halfway into the first half. Julia scored
the next two goals (the second off an assist from Annelysse Eggold) and
Kaitlin Mohr finished off the scoring off a dish from Jessica Brown. JV
has now won three straight games by four goals or more.
Falcons Open With Twin Wins
over Barons
[September 4] Torrey Pines opened its 2007 regular season
with a hard-earned 1-0 win over Bonita Vista on a steamy afternoon
in Chula Vista. Junior forward Dorian O'Leary tallied the Falcons' only
goal (and her first as a varsity player) with an assist by Paige Simmons
about 20 minutes into the first half when she pounced on a loose ball in
front of the Baron's net.
The JV Falcons got their regular season off to
a spectacular start by pounding Bonita Vista 8-0. Jessica Brown had three
goals; Ling Yeung and Annelysse Eggold scored two each, while Kaitlin Mohr
tallied once for what is quickly turning into a high-powerd JV offense.
Huge Weekend For Falcon Alums
Former Torrey Pines field hockey stars now playing in
college had quite a weekend in Division One games played back east. Katie
Griswold (2007) scored her first and second collegiate goals as the
Indiana Hoosiers pounded St Louis 8-0. Heather
Wiley (2005) also scored her first-ever collegiate goal, as the Michigan
Wolverines dropped a 2-3 decision in overtime to No. 1 ranked Maryland.

(Miami Ohio and Michigan St); Missy
Briery (2004) knotched a goal for the Louisville Cardinals in a 4-1
win over Albany; Danielle
Neault (2005) saw action in both of Pacific's games (Missouri St and
Stanford); and Jessica
Reading (2005) started at mid in Miami of Ohio's games against Boston
U. and Michigan St.
Last-minute score saves Falcons
[August 30] The varsity Falcons literally left it to
the last minutes to salvage a 1-1 tie with Helix in their second and final
scrimmage of the pre-season. Playing on the lumpy grass of the Torrey baseball
diamond rather than their usual smooth-as-silk turf, the Falcons found
it difficult to move the ball or muster a sustained attack in the first
half. Helix drew first blood, scoring on a break up the middle of the Torrey
defense at the start of the second half. Junior keeper Ashlee Schlesier
made a sprawling save a few minutes later. After that it was all Falcons,
repeated attacks into the Helix end that finally paid off with 90 seconds
to play when soph forward Chelsea Yogerst scored out of a scrum in front
of the Highlander goal. Even though they’re not well known along the coast,
Helix is no slouch at hockey: the Highlanders finished 17-6 last year and
made the CIF quarters.
Affairs went much easier over on the JV side, as the Falcons
ran up a 5-0 victory over Helix. Julia Colley drew first blood, scoring
unassisted about five minutes into the game. Annelysse Eggold scored next,
off a short corner from Colley. Annelysse slapped in another goal a few
minutes later to run the halftime score to 3-0. After intermission, Lucy
Busby scored off a sharp pass from fellow frosh Dana Manheim, and Kaitlin
Mohr on a pass (we think) from Annelysse.
Falcons Top Serra in Season
Opener
[August 28] Ana Carlsson kicked off her career as head
of the Torrey Pines field hockey program with a 2-0 win over longtime rival
Serra in a scrimmage at Falcon Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. Both teams
looked rusty in the first half, as the momentum swayed back and forth.
Serra had the better scoring chances,
but couldn't finish. Around five minutes into the second
half, senior forward Tori Cameron scored on a rebound in front of the Serra
net to give Torrey the lead. The Falcons dominated the rest of the way,
padding their lead on a swirl-around goal by Paige Simmons off a sharp
sideline pass from
Sheridan Edwards.
Over on the JV side, the Falcons earned a hard-earned
1-1 tie with their Serra counterparts. The scoreless first half was dominated
by Torrey, which finally took the lead early in the second half when sophomore
forward Julia Colley slammed home an unassisted goal. Serra got the goal
back about ten
minutes later and neither team could score again before
the finish.
Fall Sport Mandatory Meeting
& Field Hockey Meeting - Aug 30th, 6p.m. in the Gym.
Please plan to attend a Fall Sports meeting for all players
and parents (Varsity, JV, and Freshmen) in the gymnasium at TPHS on Thursday,
August 30th, at 6:00pm. There will also be an important field hockey
meeting immediately following in the old AV room. This is an opportunity
to learn about the field hockey program, order/purchase spirit wear, sign-up
to volunteer to help the field hockey program, and to make much-needed
donations that are the primary means of support to run the field hockey
program.
So, "My daughter has been
