Summer League Hockey
It's not too late to sign up for the brand new Summer Field Hockey League, which coaches Amy Kivett and Kari DeGuilio are running at Falcon Stadium this summer for high school teams from all around San Diego. The league runs June 18th to July 18th, with two games per week (normally on Monday and Wednesday) in the late afternoon. The format is 7x7, half field.  Click Here so see the flier with additional information and the sign-up sheet.

Torrey Pre-Season Camp
Coach Kari DiGuilio is hosting a three-day field hockey camp at Torrey Pines, August 6th-8th. The camp will be intense and motivational, helping athletes to gear up for their high school tryouts. The cirriculum will focus on skills and game play, but will also help athletes understand what makes a good tryout and how to be better prepared before their tryouts actually begin. Athletes in attendance will receive a formal evaluation on the final day complete with strengths and areas of improvement to help them move forward into tryouts. Click Here to get a copy of the flier and consent form.

Five Falcons Make Futures Regional Teams
Five girls from Torrey Pines were recently named to the U.S. Field Hockey regional national team after an intense round of tryouts at Cal Berkeley. The teams will represent Region 11 (California) at the National Futures Tournament in Virginia at the end of June. Named to the Under-19 team were seniors Katie Griswold and Christi Barwick. Named to the Under-16 team were sophomores Alexa Golden and Paige Simmons, and freshman Chelsea Yogerst (alt). For all five of these Falcons, 2007 marks the second time (or more) they have earned regional national team honors.

For those who are playing Field Hockey at TPHS in the fall season. . .
    1) For anyone interested in playing field hockey next year, there is a meeting this Weds (June 6th) during lunchtime in Room 52.
    2) Athletics Physical Night for those who are planning on playing hockey in the fall is Thursday, June 7th, 6-8 PM, in Building B. Click Here for more info

Club Falcons Score at Cal Cup
The Falcons field hockey club had a successful trip to Moorpark over Memorial Day weekend, taking three of five games in the Under 19 division of the annual Cal Cup tournament. The team got off to a rocky start with a 5-0 loss to Wargles, but thereafter improved with each game. They dropped 3-1 decision to Saratoga from northern California, but the outcome was in doubt until late in the second half. Chelsea Yogerst scored the Falcons lone goal on a pass from Taylor Hunner. But that would be the last loss of the tourney for Coach Amy Kivett’s young team. The following day they earned wins over two older, more experienced high school teams – 1-0 over San Diego Intensity (Patrick Henry’s club team) and 1-0 again over San Jose Fly. Chelsea knocked in a rebound for the only goal against SDI, while Sheridan Edwards scored off a pass from Keely O’Brien in the San Jose game. Falcon keeper Ashlee Schlesier got the shutouts in both games, with help from a sold back line that included Shanti Devasirvatham, Stephanie Gerretsen and Sharon Wiley. The Falcons final “W” was a forfeit win over Quicksilver Cats II from northern Cal, who didn’t bother to show for their tourney finale.

Cal Cup’s U19 division features teams from California, Colorado, Missouri, Kentucky and Canada. The Falcons will play four games in pool play on Saturday and Sunday at Cal Lutheran and Moorpark College, and at least one more game on Monday depending on their results from the weekend. Saturday, November 18th... The Varsity Falcons suffered a heartbreaking 2-3 loss to rival LCC this afternoon.  For the record, LCC jumped out to an early lead on a goal by Laura Maffucci less than four minutes into the game. The Falcons came storming back on scores by Paige Simmons (on a superb cross from Jane Mitchell) and then Mitchell (on a pass from Megan Psyllos) to take a 2-1 halftime lead. LCC tied things up around 20 minutes into the second half when Lauren Lucido scored off a short corner. The Mavs tallied the winning goal with less than three minutes to play on a cross from Lucido to Kristen Sondag. The Falcons finished the season with 24 wins and three defeats; LCC finished 24-1 with their only loss coming against Torrey during the regular season. .

Wednesday, November 15th... The Falcons booked their ticket to the Division I final with an emphatic 2-0 victory over Vista. Not the least bit intimidated by playing on the road, the Panthers started strong with repeated attacks against the Torrey defense. But it was this aggressive play that eventually got them in trouble, the Falcons notching their first goal about midway through the first half on a quick counterattack up the middle of the field. On the fastbreak Torrey connected on four straight passes, the last from Megan Psyllos to Shannon Smoot, who knocked it past the Vista keeper for what would prove to be the game-winning score. The momentum swung back and forth for the remainder of the game. Using their superior speed, the Panthers were able to work the ball behind the Falcon defense on several occasions, but could never get off a strong shot on goal. Megan put the icing on the cake with less than a minute to play when she scored on a long shot after a Torrey short corner.

In the other semifinal LCC defeated Fallbrook 4-1.

Monday, November 13th... The Varsity Falcons inched by in their Quarterfinal game of the CIF championship this evening defeating Rancho Buena Vista. Sofia Lama put the Falcons on the board with a 1-0 lead just minutes into the first half. However, the Longhorns eventually answered back with a goal of their own off a nicely executed short corner 20 minutes into the second half.  The Falcons missed two penalty strokes that could have secured their victory in the regular game. With one goal each at the end of regulation play, neither team was able to score through two overtimes. While resolving the contest in strokes, Falcons keeper Christie Barwick demonstrated her impressive ability by blocking every shot by the Broncos. The only score by either team at the end of strokes was by Linda Rassenti. The Falcons will now move on to the CIF Semifinals at 3:00PM on Wednesday at TPHS to meet Vista, who will no doubt be looking for another upset victory.

In other quarterfinal action, Fallbrook upset fourth-ranked San Pasqual 2-1; LCC topped Mira Mesa 2-0; and Vista upset third-ranked Scripps Ranch 1-0.

Tuesday, November 7th... Varsity easily won 4-1 over Poway in their final home game of the regular season with goals by Griz (2) and Tori (2).  A festive pregame ceremony honored our nine graduating seniors: Christi, Belz, Griz, Jane, Rachel, Megan, Lauren, Johnna, and Sofia.  Varsity coach Kari "Deeg" DiGiulio was also honored as she will be "graduating" from the TPHS field hockey program to coach her growing family.  The Torrey JV ended their season with a 1-0 win over the Poway Titans. The only score came around 14 minutes into the first half on a short corner. Dorian O'Leary notched the goal on a push from Taylor Hunner and a stop by Chelsea Yogerst. It was quite a season for the younger Falcons, who chalked up what we believe is the most single season wins in Torrey JV history (19) and who beat every other traditional field hockey power in San Diego (including LCC, Scripps Ranch, Serra,  San Pasqual and Fallbrook) at least once over the past two months. Their final overall record was 19-4, one of the top JV winning percentages of all time.

November 2nd... We believe Varsity beat the RB Broncos, but had to catch a plane before the game was over.  Playing before the varsity game, the JV Falcons beat their RB counterparts 5-0. Torrey got off to a lightning start, racing to a two-goal after just four minutes of play, both of the goals scored by Chelsea Yogerst on assists from Kendra Bills. Chelsea scored again near the end of the first half, this time on a pass from Sheridan Edwards. Taylor Hunter and Shelby Brown popped in goals in the second half, the former out of a scrum in front of the Broncos goal, and second on a pass from Chelsea. The Falcon defense was once again dominant, holding the Broncos to zero corners and no shots on goal.

Playing elsewhere up the I-15 corridor, the Torrey Freshmen lost 2-1 on strokes to the Poway JV (after scoreless regulation). Julia Colley tallied the only successful stroke for the Falcons.

Woohoo!!! October 31st... Varsity had reason to celebrate this evening for their victory over rival La Costa Canyon. Sofia Lama put the Falcons on the board first, but the Mavericks tied it up before halftime. The teams finished regular play and one 10-minute overtime with the score still tied 1-1. In strokes, the first three Falcon shooters, Paige, Sofia, and Megan all successfully shot into the cage despite the efforts of the LCC keeper. All of the first three LCC strokes were either blocked by Falcon keeper Christi Barwick, or were wide of the goal. The JV Falcons dropped a 1-0 decision to the Mavs despite dominating play for most of the game. LCC scored on a fastbreak down the right side four minutes into the second half. Jessie Hallstrom made several brilliant saves in goal to keep Torrey in the game. The Falcons fought back valiantly and attacked repeatedly through the rest of the half, but their rally fell short. Playing on the upper field, the Freshmen team lost 1-0 in overtime to the Westview JV.

Thursday, October 26th... Varsity beat Mt Carmel 8-0 with goals by Griz (3), Paige, Johnna, Becky Trees, Lauren Schaerer and Julie Westover.

The JV Falcons tuned up for their Halloween showdown with LCC by thumping the Falcon Freshmen 4-0. Sheridan Edwards had a awesome game on offense, scoring three of the JV goals, the first just seven minutes into the game on a hard shot from the top of the circle. Shelby Brown scored a few minutes later to give the JV a two-goal lead at intermission. Sheridan whacked in two more in the second half, the last on a "give and go" to Stephanie Gerretsen on her own push pass off a short corner. The victory upped the JV's record to 17-3 overall -- same as the vaunted junior varsity squad of three years ago that featured many of the current varsity stars.

The following day the Freshmen traveled to Cathedral, but couldn't pull off another upset of the Dons. The final score was 2-1, with Britney Massimino scoring the Falcon's only goal off an assist from Julia Colley.

Take a look at the Carmel Valley News that just came out today (October 26th).  There's a story about the Serra Tournament on page 59 and our JV team is mentioned.

Tuesday, October 24th... Varsity beat Westview 1-0 this evening in Falcon Stadium.  The JV Falcons ran their overall record to 16-3 with a resounding 4-0 victory over Westview. Chelsea Yogerst got Torrey off to a quick start with a backhanded goal in the first minute off a long pass from Sharon Wiley. Sheridan Edwards added another goal before halftime on a lightning shot from the top of the circle. Chelsea scored again with about five minutes left to play, knocking the ball in from a "scrum" in front of the Wolverine goal. Shelby Brown finished off the scoring with only about 30 seconds left, on a pass from Danny Dhanoa after an incredible spin move by Sheridan had pushed the ball into scoring position. The Falcon defense was flawless again, allowing Westview across midfield no more a handful of times.

Thursday, October 19th... Varsity shut out Poway 1-0on the Titans' home field.  The JV also topped Poway 1-0 on a rocket shot by Shaina Connors four minutes into the second half. After being held in their end of the field most of the first half, the Titans mounted several scoring threats after intermission, with Falcons goalie Jessie Hallstrom making several great saves to preserve the win.

Playing back at Torrey, the freshmen exploded on offense, beating the San Marcos JV 5-0. The Falcons dominated at both ends of the field, holding the visiting Knights to zero shots on goal. Julia Colley got the Falcons on the board early in the game. Scores by Kaitlin Mohr and Britney Massimino (off a pass from Kaitlin) gave them a three-goal lead by the intermission. Torrey rounded off the scoring in the second half on goals by Samantha Fabiano and Madelaine Tayer (on a pass from Karen Faller).

Wednesday, October 18th... The Varsity Falcons beat Scripps Ranch 1-0 on Scripps' home field.  The JV lost 1-0 to Scripps Ranch in a scrappy game that saw momentum swing back and forth. The Falcons dominated much of the first half but couldn't get the ball in the goal. Scripps broke the deadlock about halfway through the second half on a quick counter attack after a steal just outside the Torrey circle.

Varsity won 4-1 over Rancho Bernardo Tuesday, October 17th, with goals by Griz (3) and Johnna.  The JV Falcons upped their overall record to 14-2 with a decisive 4-0 win over Rancho Bernardo. Chelsea Yogerst racked up the season's first hat-trick with a single goal in the first half (off a Sheridan Edwards pass) and two goals in the second half (one of them off a Danny Dhanoa assist). Chelsea also assisted on a second half goal by Shelby Brown. The Falcon defense played another sterling game, holding the Broncos to zero shots on goal and no corners. Playing on the upper field, the Freshmen Falcons beat the Poway JV 1-0 on strokes after scoreless regulation. Julia Colley tallied the single stroke, but that proved the difference in the game. Chelsea Graybill had a great game in goal for the Falcons.

Congratulations to the Freshmen for their 1-0 win over Scripps on Friday, October 13th. Our sources tell us the Falcons' goal was by Britney M.

Varsity suffered their first regular season loss on Thursday, October 12th, in their game on LCC's grass field. The rival teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the second half, and following a scoreless overtime LCC managed to squeak by in strokes.  The JV Falcon's 13-game win streak came to an end with a 1-0 loss to LCC. The game's only goal came around 12 minutes into the first half on what can only be described as a freak play. An LCC short corner deflected off a Torrey defender's stick, looped about 15 feet into the air and into the back of the net. The two refs had to huddle and discuss the play before eventually deciding that it was a goal. The Falcons dominated the second half with great defense and repeated attacks, but couldn't get the tying score. The only Torrey winner on the day was the Freshmen team, which beat the Westview JV 1-0 on a goal by Britney Massimino.

Varsity and JV each had a winning afternoon this Tuesday, October 10th.  Varsity easily beat Mt. Carmel 10-0 on the Sundevils' new turf.  Goals were by Tori (2), Paige (2), Griz (2), Shannon Smoot, Megan Psyllos, Johnna and Linda Rassenti. Although we don't yet have the shots on goal stats, this was another shutout for goalkeeper Christi. Mt. Carmel only has a Varsity team, so the JV Falcons met the Freshmen Falcons to give each the opportunity to play.  JV Falcon goals were by Chelsea, Kendra, and Stephanie Cowles. Although the Freshmen didn't register a goal, their defense did well to hold the JV team to only 3 goals.

The Falcon freshmen lost their first game of the season, 3-0 to the Rancho Buena Vista JV on Oct 4th. They kept it close in the first half, but the older and more experienced Longhorns eventually won the day. RBV didn't score their first goal until right before intermission and didn't pull away until the second half.

The Varsity Falcons finished in the top 3 of the championship bracket of the 30th annual Serra tournament this Saturday, October 7th.  The first weekend, September 30th, the Falcons beat Eastlake, Helix, and University City in the regular pool bracket. The following weekend Varsity advanced to the championship bracket and shut out Fallbrook 1-0 in the quarterfinals.  We went on to play LCC in the semi's and were tied at the end of regulation play.  We unfortunately lost in strokes to them, but the girls played REALLY well.  We then went on to play San Pasqual for the 3rd place finish and beat them 1-0.  LONG DAY!!! LCC won the tournament against host team, SERRA.

Three of our players, Megan, Johnna, and Griz, were named to the Serra Tourney team.  Griz also won the Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the tournament.

Both Varsity and JV shut out Westview on Thursday, October 5th in Wolverine Stadium.  Varsity won 4-0 with all goals by Griz.  The JV Falcons won 3-0 over the Wolverines. Shanti scored what turned out to be the winning goal about five minutes into the game. Torrey iced things in the second half on goals by Stephanie Cowles (off a Bianca Liu pass) and Kendra Bills..

October 3rd, Varsity shut out Bonita Vista 6-0 with goals by Paige (2), Shannon (2), Megan (1) and Tori (1).  The JV Falcons bested BV by a 3-0 score, although it could have been much higher given the number of shots on goal that Torrey had. Dorian O'Leary scored the first Falcon goal off a pass from Ashley Graver about seven minutes into the game. Despite intense pressure, Torrey didn't score again until about halfway through the second half when Shaina Conners hit off a pass from Taylor Hunner. Sheridan Edwards notched Torrey's final goal with only 48 seconds left in the game, the 11th victory in a row for the JV team. The Falcon's stingy defense allowed Bonita Vista just one shot on goal and kept the ball in BV territory for more than 90% of the game.

Sept 28th, The Falcon Varsity conquered the Serra Conquistadors 2-1 with the winning goal scored in the last minute of the second half. Falcon goals were by Griz and Johnna. The JV Falcons beat their Serra counterparts by the same 2-1 score. Torrey drew first blood about nine minutes into the game when Kendra Bills scooped up a blocked shot by the Serra goalie, spun around and slammed the ball into the goal. The Falcons scored again six minutes later when Tara Mullally dished off to Shaina, a goal that gave the home team a commanding 2-0 lead. Torrey continued to dominate in the second half with the Serra keeper recording numerous saves to keep the game within reach. Serra finally scored with less than five minutes remaining -- the first goal against the Falcon JV defense in ten games.

Varsity Serra Tournament update, this Saturday, Sept 30th: Click here for the tournament schedule.  Our regular pool games are at 9:00am (University Ciry), 12:00pm (Eastlake), and 3:00pm (Helix). All of our regular pool games are on the hockey field at Serra High School.  (directions, map)

The Varsity Falcons set the tone for the afternoon by remaining undefeated with a 2-0 win over the varsity Eagles, with goals by Griz and Alexa. The Falcons JV racked up their ninth straight win with a 1-0 victory over San Pasqual. The game's only score came 16 minutes into the first half on a Torrey short corner that turned into a broken play. Chelsea Yogerst pounced on the loose ball in the middle of the circle and passed to Sheridan Edwards at the side of the net, who blasted it past the SP goalie.

The freshmen Falcons ran their record to 3-0 with two more victories last week.  On Sept 19th they beat Scripps Ranch 1-0 on a goal by Madeleine Tayer off a pass from Julia Colley. Three days later they bested the Cathedral JV team 2-0 with both scores coming early in the first half. Julia notched the first goal (unassisted) and Madeleine the second on an assist from Julia.

(Tuesday, September 19th) Both Varsity and JV returned from Vista this afternoon with another shut-out win under their belts. Varsity started off, caging the Panthers 2-0.  After shutting out the JV Panthers on Saturday morning, the JV Falcons celebrated a repeat performance this afternoon but this time with a trio of goals first by Sheridan Edwards, then Kendra Bills on a short corner, and another by Stephanie Cowles.

Updated game schedule: LCC game at TPHS on Oct 31st, JV plays first, Varsity plays afterward, times are the same. All the latest updates are on the schedule page, or here's a schedule you can print like the one in your booklet.

The JV Falcons earned the title of 2006 Serra JV Tournament champions this Saturday, September 16th.  The Falcons shut out all three teams in their pool. In their first game of the morning with Vista (1-0 Falcons) Stephanie Cowles scored on an assist by Sheridan Edwards. After a long morning break the Falcons dominated Santana winning 1-0 with Shanthi Devasirvatham scoring the only goal on an assist by Sheridan on a beautiful short corner. Torrey Pines rolled over Hilltop 3-0 in the last game of pool play. The first goal was by Chelsea Yogerst with an assist by Stephanie Cowles and Sheridan. The second goal was off a short corner hit by Sheridan to Chelsea to we think Keely O’Brien, and the final goal was by Chelsea on a pass from Shelby Brown.  Moving into the semifinals the Falcons faced rival LCC in a close match-up.  Stephanie Cowles scored on an assist from Kendra Bills, while the Falcon defense maintained a virtual fortress around their own goal keeping the Mavericks scoreless, and earning the opportunity to go up against Scripps Ranch in the final contest for the championship.  In the first half Sheridan assisted on the only goal of the game scored on an apparent simultaneous shot by Shelby and Stephanie Cowles. The Falcon defense and keeper Jessie Hallstrom again held off all attempts on the goal by Scripps.  The JV Falcons have had an excellent showing in the Serra Tournament in past years. Our sources tell us that in 2005 (Sept 17th) and 2003 (Sept 20th), JV were finalists, and the 2001 JV Falcons were either finalists or champions with the semifinal game being decided in strokes against either Scripps or LCC.
The results of all four pools are here.

The JV Falcons receive the 9th annual Serra JV Tournament Championship trophy.

The Falcon Freshmen started their season with a 1-0 victory over Scripps Ranch this Friday, September 15th. Forward Julia Colley scored the game's only goal early in the second half to secure the win.

Congratulations Varsity and JV who both shut out Fallbrook 1-0 Thursday afternoon, September 15th, on the Warriors' hockey field.  Varsity dominated but remained scoreless until Tori Cameron put the Falcons on the board in second half.  JV also dominated but tied 0-0 at the end of regular play.  In sudden-death overtime playing 7-on-7 Sharon Wiley rocketed a free hit diagonally through the Warrior defense which was picked up by Kendra Bills.  Kendra drove across the goal and shot the game-winning score.

Congratulations Varsity and JV. Varsity shut out SDA 3-0 in Falcon Stadium this afternoon, with goals by Griz and Tori.  The JV earned a 4-0 win over SDA. Dorian O'Leary got the Falcons on the scoreboard 11 minutes into the first half on a short pass up the middle from Sheridan Edwards. Sheridan notched her own goal a few minutes later on a pass from Chelsea Yogerst. Just before halftime Chelsea assisted on another goal, a fast-break pass to Shelby Brown who blasted the ball past the Mustang keeper. The same duo scored again around 4 minutes into the second half, Chelsea dishing off to Shelby on another fast break. The Torrey defense turned in an excellent game, limiting SDA to just two corners and one shot on goal.

Update regarding the Serra JV Tournament this Saturday: We have a tournament schedule and tournament rules. Our regular pool games are at 8:10am (Vista), 12:10pm (Santana), and 2:50pm (Hilltop). Depending on our standing at the end of the pool games, playoffs begin at 3:40pm.

Congratulations Varsity. The Varsity Falcons shut out Rancho Buena Vista 2-0 this afternoon, September 6th, on the Longhorns' brand new turf.  Griz and Paige scored our two goals.  The JV Falcons dropped a 2-1 decision to a seasoned Rancho Buena Vista JV team that has been playing together since last spring -- largely the same squad that wound up unbeaten (and the top U.S. finisher) in the Under 16 division at the most recent Cal Cup.  RBV came out blazing and jumped to a quick lead. But the Falcons dominated the remainder of the first half, advancing repeatedly into Longhorn territory and eventually tying the score on an assist from Chelsea Yogerst to Stephanie Cowles. The game waged back and forth after intermission, with RBV finally pushing ahead with about 10 minutes to play.

So, "My daughter has been playing field hockey for years, and this game still seems so confusing.  What's a parent to do?" Simple, take a look at the US Field Hockey basic rules. It's only about a 5-minute read and will clarify most of the questions you may have about the game.

Parents, in case you missed the TPHS Fall Sports meeting on Thursday evening, then please contact Jill Simoes to get your copy of the field hockey directory, to pay the bus transportation fee (bus fee for Varsity and JV only), and to make your much needed donation to the field hockey program.

Congratulations Varsity and JV. We heard Varsity won 2-1 in the scrimmage at Serra High School this afternoon, August 30th. JV tied 0-0.
